Strategies to Reduce the Impact of Inflation

Inflation is impacting virtually every product and service. Prices at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, car dealerships, and airlines are increasing.
Because we are paying more for less, many people are spending less in certain areas to adjust for the increasing cost of living. If you are looking for suggestions, the following strategies can help.
1. Create and Follow a Budget
Understand where your money is going:
2. Reduce Your Gas Consumption
Consider the following strategies to lower your use of gas:
Take public transportation.
Carpool.
Bicycle.
Use a free app, such as Gas Buddy, Gas Guru, or Waze, to find the least expensive gas within a reasonable driving distance.
See if your grocery store partners with gas stations to offer a fuel discount program.
Modify your driving habits to reduce how quickly your vehicle burns fuel:
Unload the back seat and trunk: Removing unnecessary items lowers weight and conserves fuel, increasing your miles per gallon (MPG).
Do not carry cargo on your roof: A cargo box increases wind resistance and reduces fuel economy.
Consolidate errands: Since a warmed-up engine runs more efficiently than a cold one, combining your stops into one trip saves on fuel.
Follow the speed limit: Every 5 MPH over 50 MPH burns more fuel and empties your tank.
Do not drive aggressively: High speeds, fast acceleration, and hard braking lower your gas mileage.
Avoid prolonged idling: Turn off your engine if you are stopped for over 10 seconds to reduce fuel consumption.
3. Lower Your Grocery Bills
These tips can help you pay less for groceries:
Plan your meals: Check your pantry to avoid buying what you already have. Incorporate a vegetarian dinner once or twice a week to spend less on meat.
Adhere to a shopping list: Avoid impulse purchases that increase your spending.
Participate in a store loyalty program: You might receive discounts, coupons on items you regularly purchase, and/or reduce the price of gas at participating stations.
Buy in bulk: Join a warehouse club such as Costco to buy in bulk and pay less per unit for items you use. Avoid perishables if you cannot use them by the expiration date.
4. Pay Down Debt
Pay off debts with variable interest rates, since monthly payments generally increase during times of inflation. In contrast, make monthly payments on debts with a fixed interest rate, since they should remain the same.
Take steps to lower the interest rates on your credit cards, car loans, personal loans, medical bills, or other debts. Pay on time and improve your credit score.
Consider combining your debts into one personal loan. Debt consolidation could save on interest, reduce your monthly payments, and/or pay off your debt faster.
5. Earn Cash Back on Purchases
Some cash-back apps provide a rebate when you shop at participating merchants. The apps steer buyers to certain retailers, earn commissions, and share some of the money with customers. Similarly, many credit cards reward users with points, miles, or cash back.
6. Reevaluate Your Auto and Home Insurance Coverage
Review your auto and homeowner’s insurance policies to determine whether the coverage still fits your needs. Consider making updates that can lower your premiums:
Increase your deductibles while ensuring you have adequate coverage to avoid paying a lot out of pocket if you file a claim.
Bundle auto and homeowner’s insurance from the same company to reduce your premiums.
Ask the insurer if you qualify for discounts, such as a “good driver” discount for being accident-free for years, or a reduced homeowner’s premium for installing security devices at your residence.
7. Adjust Your Tax Withholdings
A large tax refund means your paychecks are smaller throughout the year because too much money is being withheld for taxes. Consider letting your employer know you want to revise your Form W-4. Then, you can receive more money in each paycheck to set aside for savings and pay your bills.
